We thought that we’d give you and inside look at this process by having our lead Research Engineer introduce you to what we’re doing to help make your digital documents clear and legible.

Generating legible documents

Qipit is the solution developed by RealEyes3d to process and share document images. By document images, we mean all kinds of images which include some handwritten or machine printed text.

Qipit introduces a really new way of using cameraphones. Much more than shooting pictures of your dog or friends for fun, you can now shoot pictures of your really important documents on the go.

Basic cameraphones often produce images with poor quality. Because of some very specific design, cameraphones have some limitations which we have to take into account, if we want to produce legible documents - meaning it should be really tedious or even impossible to be read by someone without any enhancement.

We did more than just designing qipit to perform the best document image enhancement, we designed qipit to perform it automatically without annoying you. While using any image editing software requires some hard knowledge from you, as well as setting up a lot of tedious input parameters. qipit hides all the ugly image enhancement stuff, which is a major strength!

Sharpening, aligning, contrasting… and more to come

So, what’s hidden inside qipit ? Qipit can reduce blur in your document images. Qipit doesn’t simply increase contrast as most of the image editing software does by providing sharpening abilities. Qipit tries to retrieve some lost details hidden in your blurred documents. By doing such a task, qipit can restore some thin lines or thin characters even in hard lightening conditions.

When you are on the go, you should not be stressed too much about perfectly framing of the document. Qipit helps you to produce straight documents by detecting the frame borders and automatically creating a well aligned document. Once again, even if an image editing software can be used to correct perspective, it can’t detect the frame borders automatically as qipit does.

Another fantastic qipit feature resides in improving contrast, and reducing or annealing shadows. As you probably experienced, shooting document images in all conditions is sometimes a real challenge. Documents may appear unevenly illuminated or shadows are visible, as you are not always in control of the lightening conditions.
Maybe, you experienced the binarize feature from any image editing software, and get a two-tones image, which is well contrasted. But, such results look often like a large white or black area, missing the important contents of your document. Hopefully, qipit deals really well with uneven ligthening condition and shadows removal. But, much more than this, qipit does it automatically !
