Realeyes3D Cracks 1D Barcode Scanning for Camera Phones

January 25th, 2008

Thanks to the efforts of our brilliant research and development team (the same team that developed the technology behind Qipit), we are very excited to announce that Realeyes3D is the first and only company (as far as we know) in the world with the technology to scan 1D barcode images using almost any camera phone. WOW!

What this will mean to you, is that in the near future you will be able to walk up to anything with a bar code, pull out your camera phone, scan it, and well….get all kinds of information. The possibilities are really endless, in-store price comparisons, on-site user product ratings, detailed product information, on-the-spot product purchases, you get the picture. This opens up mobile commerce on a massive scale.

Soup to Nuts - Bar Codes are Everywhere

From soup to nuts standard 1D barcodes are everywhere, printed on billions of products worldwide and are linked to a vast number of both free and commercial databases. In the past, average cell phone cameras (camera phones without auto-focus or macro-mode) have had trouble taking a clear picture of a barcode. When shot at close range, beyond the minimum focal distance of most camera phones, barcode lines become blurred. The result was a useless image for decoding. This breakthrough technology overcomes this blurring for average camera phones (with a minimum VGA (640×480) resolution).

As you can see, the result is an image that can be used to successful decode the printed parallel lines that represent the ID number 4025515825135. This ID number is then linked to a database identifying the product.

Our solution can be deployed in many different ways and can work with just one-click from the customer. We are already in trials with a major wireless carrier and will be very excited to deploy this product on a global scale to make everyone’s life a little bit easier. This is great news for consumers, not so great news for outdated retail store policies of no pictures (Read my Camera Phones Cheese and Whole Foods post), soon there will be millions of customers using camera phones to enhance their shopping experience. I mentioned a few ideas to use this technology in a consumer related manner, we would love to hear how you think the technology can be used.

Any update on this technology? This could be groundbreaking stuff. I’d like to know when we can expect something tangible. Thanks!
